Why do some wall decals use woven fabric and others vinyl?

We choose the material to suit the artwork and how it needs to go onto your wall. Woven fabric works well for solid shapes and panels. Our matte vinyl lets us make detailed designs with lots of separate pieces, while keeping them together for installation.

The artwork comes first

A large mural dot and a flax bush need quite different handling. The dot is one solid shape. The flax can have many individual leaves, each with its own position. We want both designs to arrive with a practical way to put them up.

That is why our products do not normally have a fabric-or-vinyl selection. We have already chosen the material for that particular design. Check the material information on its product page before ordering.

Woven fabric for peel-and-stick shapes

We use woven fabric for many solid designs, mural dots and wall mural panels. These designs can be peeled from their backing and applied without a separate layer of application tape.

Our woven fabric decals can also be removed carefully and reused. Take your time: although the material is strong, pulling hard can stretch it and make it harder to lay flat again. Reuse also depends on keeping the adhesive clean and having a suitable new surface.

Matte vinyl for the fine details

For designs such as detailed flax, cabbage trees or lettering, we use a removable matte vinyl made in Germany. A temporary application tape holds the individual pieces in their intended positions, so you can apply the design together rather than place every small piece separately.

Once the decal is on the wall, the application tape is removed. It is an installation aid, not a clear sheet intended to remain over the finished artwork. The application tape we use for these designs is not suitable for our woven fabric.

What the finished artwork looks like

Our standard online decals have a matte finish. We cut closely around the artwork where the design calls for it, helping it sit naturally on the wall without a large surrounding sheet. Some artwork intentionally includes a background or border; the product images show the design you are buying.

Detailed vinyl designs are not intended for repeated removal and reapplication. Choose with that in mind if you expect to move the artwork regularly.

Check the actual product, not just the collection

A collection can contain designs made with different materials. Look for the material description and installation instructions on the individual page. If you would like to test adhesion, email us with the design name so we can provide a sample of the right material.

Frequently asked questions

Can I choose woven fabric instead of vinyl?

The material is normally fixed for each design. We choose it around the artwork and installation method. Contact us before ordering if you have a particular requirement.

Why does my decal have application tape?

It keeps separate leaves, letters or other small pieces in position while you apply them together. Remove the tape as directed after the artwork is attached.

Does application tape stay on the wall?

No. For our application-tape vinyl designs, it is a temporary installation layer. Only the intended decal remains once the tape is removed.

Are all mural dots made the same way?

Check the individual product description. Woven fabric is commonly used for our mural dots because it suits a large, solid peel-and-stick shape.

Which material can I reuse?

Our woven fabric decals can be carefully removed and reused. Our detailed vinyl decals are not designed for reapplication.

Are your standard decals glossy?

Our standard online decals have matte finishes. A custom project may have a different agreed finish, so its specification should be checked separately.

Can I test the material on my wall?

Yes. Email us with the design you are considering so the sample matches the material used for that artwork.

Is the commercial material the same as my home decal?

Not necessarily. We also offer high-tack laminated graphics by enquiry for suitable commercial projects. We assess the site and cleaning requirements before recommending a material.
