A local story, woven into the space
The brief called for an environment with a meaningful connection to place. The artwork draws on the arrival of the Tākitimu waka at Māhia, with the design developed by our studio team and finalised with Kaumātua Hawira Hape.
That collaboration shaped a visual story for patients, whānau and staff to encounter as they move through the unit.
Depth, detail and careful contrast
Seven wooden whale forms and gold metallic stars sit against a subtle mural backdrop. The layered approach lets the engraved details stand out, giving the wall depth and a different presence as people move past it.
Designing and making the elements in our own studio allowed us to consider the complete composition, from the larger wall scene to the finish of each individual piece.
