Two New Zealand family businesses

Small beginnings.
A shared love of home.

Different crafts. The same hands-on spirit.

Resene began in a Wellington garage in 1946. YDS began in 2012 with Antony and Jess, a laptop and an idea to bring original New Zealand design into people’s homes.

Our stories share that familiar Kiwi starting point: a family, an idea, and the determination to build something from the ground up. Resene grew through paint and colour. We grew through artwork inspired by the birds, plants and places around us.

Today, we still design and make our decals in-house in New Zealand. Bringing YDS to Resene ColorShops connects those two stories: locally made artwork, a love of colour and inspiration for the spaces we live in.

Before you begin

A little preparation.
A beautiful finish.

Good preparation starts with your paint. Follow your paint system’s instructions and the installation guide supplied with your YDS decal.

YDS installation guides

Start smooth

Prepare your surface properly before painting. Lightly sand between coats where your paint instructions call for it, and remove all sanding dust before the next coat.

Give fresh paint time

Resene’s current wall decal guide recommends waiting one month for freshly painted walls to fully cure before applying a decal.

Clean, dry and ready

Once cured, wipe the area with a slightly damp, lint-free cloth to remove dust. Let the wall dry completely, then follow your decal’s installation steps.

Paint, colour
& wall decals.

Planning a wall refresh? Here is a little guidance to help you get started.

Where can I see YDS wall decals at Resene?

You can see YDS wall decals on display and browse our lookbook at Resene ColorShops throughout New Zealand. Visit your local store to see the detail in person, gather ideas and talk through your wall colour.

Can I order YDS decals through any Resene ColorShop in New Zealand?

Yes. You can order our decals through any Resene ColorShop in New Zealand. Choose your design from the lookbook and discuss the size and colour with the team. We then make your decal to order in our New Zealand studio.

Can I buy the designs on the YDS website too?

Yes. Browse our wall decals online, including Stenciled Peonies, Nau mai, haere mai and Welcome Word Art. Eligible single-colour product pages include our Colour Studio, where you can explore Resene-inspired colours and request a colour sample.

Will my decal exactly match a Resene paint colour?

No. Our decal colours are inspired by Resene paint colours, but they are not exact paint matches. Paint, printed decal material, surface finish, screens and lighting all affect how a colour looks. Use a physical decal sample alongside your painted wall before deciding.

How do I order a decal colour sample?

Open an eligible single-colour product, such as Stenciled Peonies, Nau mai, haere mai or Welcome Word Art. In the Colour Studio, choose your colours and open “Request a colour sample”. Check the physical sample in your room in daylight and with your evening lighting.

How long should fresh paint cure before applying a decal?

Resene’s current wall decal guide recommends waiting one month for freshly painted walls to fully cure before applying a decal. Paint that feels dry is not necessarily fully cured. Follow the instructions for your particular paint and ask your Resene ColorShop about your surface or conditions.

How should I prepare my wall?

Start with a smooth, clean, dry, sound painted surface. During painting, follow the paint system’s preparation guidance, including light sanding between coats where appropriate, and remove all sanding dust. Once the paint has fully cured, wipe the decal area with a slightly damp, lint-free cloth to remove dust, then let it dry completely before installation.

Which paint finish is suitable for wall decals?

Resene’s guide lists matte, low-sheen, satin and semi-gloss painted surfaces as suitable. The surface should be smooth rather than heavily textured. Check the instructions supplied with your decal, and ask Resene or YDS for advice about your particular paint and wall before ordering.

Are YDS wall decals made in New Zealand?

Yes. We design and make our wall decals to order in-house in New Zealand. YDS Studio is our family business, founded by Antony and Jess in 2012 and previously known as Your Decal Shop. Our collection draws inspiration from New Zealand birds, native plants and the places we call home.
