IMMERSIVE COASTAL WALL GRAPHICS
& SPATIAL STORYTELLING

This project transformed the Hawke’s Bay Children’s Outpatients department into an immersive Waipātiki Beach environment.
Using large-scale illustrated wall graphics, the space was designed to create a calming, familiar setting that connects tamariki and whānau to the local landscape.
THE CONCEPT

indoors
The design draws inspiration from the Waipātiki Beach landscape, using layered coastal elements, native flora and soft natural tones to create a sense of depth and familiarity throughout the space.
The artwork was hand illustrated to reflect the Hawke’s Bay coastline, blending beach, bush and birdlife into a continuous visual story across the department.
Graphics were produced using commercial-grade wall vinyl with a matte laminated finish, suitable for healthcare environments and designed for durability and ease of cleaning.
THE DESIGN STORY
Inspired by a local place
Developed from real visits to Waipātiki Beach, the design process began with gathering reference photography and sketching key landscape features. These elements were translated into a cohesive illustrated mural that reflects the unique identity of the Hawke’s Bay coastline.
From concept development and hand illustration through to print production and installation, the project was completed entirely in-house by YDS Studio.
This approach ensured a consistent design outcome, allowing the final environment to feel immersive, connected, and deeply rooted in place.
