How do I safely hang lightweight wooden wall art?

By Your Decal Shop team Published Reviewed

Our adhesive-backed wooden wall art uses permanent high-tack vinyl backing, designed for long-term use, including commercial areas. Lightweight wood still needs a suitable wall and careful installation. Follow the instructions for the exact artwork, and do not assume it installs or removes like a removable wall decal.

Understand the permanent backing

Our Nau Mai, Haere Mai bamboo artwork is made from 3 mm bamboo ply with permanent high-tack vinyl backing for long-term fixing. That backing is not removable. Designs with separate parts include a placement template to help with alignment.

Decide on the location before removing backing paper. If you are renting, intend to move the artwork later or need a removable installation, talk to us before fitting it. Do not assume paint or plasterboard will remain undamaged when a permanent adhesive is removed.

Check the wall as carefully as the artwork

Tell us what the wall is made from, its finish, condition and whether it has recently been painted. Loose paint, moisture, texture or an unknown coating can affect the result. A clean-looking wall is not automatically suitable for the adhesive.

Follow the instructions supplied with the wooden product. General removable-decal advice does not establish whether a wood artwork's adhesive or another fixing will work on your wall. If you cannot identify the surface, send photographs and ask before you start.

The backing is permanent high-tack vinyl, designed for long-term use, including commercial areas. This sequence does not approve an alternative fixing.

Plan a multi-part design while it is still on its backing

  1. Check that you have all the pieces and the correct template.
  2. Measure the full finished design, including the spaces between separate parts.
  3. Check clearance around switches, doors, furniture and other objects.
  4. Use the template as directed and stand back to check the position.
  5. Follow the supplied fitting sequence rather than placing each letter by eye.

Keep slender letters and small details supported when handling them. Do not bend a piece to pull it away from its packaging, and avoid pressing on an unsupported delicate section. Large designs are easier to position with another person's help.

Can I use removable strips instead?

Not without checking that method for the actual artwork and surface. A strip's advertised capacity alone does not confirm that it will work with the shape, available contact area, finish or backing. Adding a different adhesive over the supplied backing may also change how the piece behaves.

Ask us about the product and ask the fixing manufacturer about its wall requirements. Where an alternative mechanical fixing is needed, use an installer who can assess the wall and artwork. We do not recommend one universal hook, tape or strip for all wooden designs.

What if a piece starts to lift?

Keep people clear of the area and contact us with a photo, the product name and wall details. Do not simply add stronger glue around the edge. Take extra care with placement above beds, seating or busy work areas, where a falling piece could cause harm.

Browse our wooden wall art and ask about installation before ordering if your surface or mounting needs are unusual.
