Should I buy my art print framed or unframed?
Buy framed when you want the artwork and frame chosen together, with less organising after it arrives. Choose unframed when you already have a suitable frame or want a particular mount, finish or specialist framing option. Compare the complete cost and finished dimensions, not just the price of the paper print.

When a framed print makes sense
A framed option is useful for a gift, a finished room or a set of prints you want to match. For example, our Hairy Maclary Group Walk Art Print offers print-only and timber-framed options. Its listed finishes include American Oak, Matte White and Matte Black, with framed options described as ready to hang.
Ready to hang does not mean every wall fixing is suitable. Check the hanging hardware and use a fixing appropriate for the wall and finished frame weight. Think about the location before ordering, especially above beds, in busy walkways or where children can reach.
When unframed is the better choice
- You have an existing frame that genuinely fits the print.
- You want a specific frame colour or a larger border around the artwork.
- You are matching a collection framed by your local framer.
- You want to discuss specialist glazing or conservation framing.
Add the frame, mount, fitting and any glazing upgrade to your budget. A lower initial print price does not always mean a lower finished cost. If the print will be framed later, keep it protected in its packaging and follow the handling instructions.
Choose your own frame, mount and glazing.
Check the selected finish and outside frame dimensions.

Check which measurement you are comparing
The paper size, visible image area, mount opening and outside frame dimensions are different measurements. An A3 print does not necessarily create an A3-sized object on the wall once a frame and mount are added.
Before reusing a frame, check its internal fit and the opening that will actually show the artwork. Do not rely only on the label or outside dimensions. If you are planning a tight space or a gallery wall, ask for the finished outside frame size for the option you want.
Choose a finish that works with the artwork
Black can give a print a strong outline; white can make the framing feel quieter; timber can repeat warm tones elsewhere in the room. These are starting points, not rules. Hold a sample or a similar object beside your wall and look at it in daylight and evening light.
For several prints, repeating one frame finish is an easy way to bring different images together. You can vary the print sizes without changing every part of the presentation.
Ask about protection if it matters to your space
Do not assume a framed option includes UV-filtering glazing, anti-reflective glazing or a particular conservation specification unless it is stated. A sunny position needs care regardless of the frame. Ask us about the exact option before ordering if you need these details.
